SAP FICO Training Experiences

I strongly believe in a divine force guiding me. I have a valid reason too. I commit lot of silly mistakes and God keeps forgiving me.

It was 6yrs back when I first went to US as an SAP Consultant. I was 25yrs old then, excited and ready to take on the world. But life had something else in store for me . A challenge, big, bold and adventorous.

I can distinctly remember, it was around 2 a.m. in the morning, i landed in Pittsburgh and my colleague Hitendra Shelkikar had come to pick-me-up from the airport . I was tired, eyes all red. 26-hour flight from Mumbai. Guess what he told me the first thing! "The whole project is dependent on you, Vish. They have crowned you as an SAP FICO Guru. Hope you know everything! ", Hiten very casually remarked.

I was without food for 24 hours(i eat only typical veggie spicy food, you don't get much of that on flights) and this statement by Hiten made me feel that i will have to starve for another 2 days on my return flight. I thought it wise to return back in the same flight. I knew very little of SAP CO then, though my Cv told a lot. There did not exist then the SAP FICO Configuration Pack which would help solve most of my problems in implementation and end user training with very little effort ( http://www.sap-topjobs.com/SpecialPP/8431654231.html)

I went back to bed that day crying not because i would be thrown out of the project but because i would not have parathas, pulav, idli dosas, and hot tea served next day by my mom. A big price to land in US I felt.

Day Two.

I take my bath, and shout for a cup of tea! No one arrives . I drink water and satisfy myself . I think of my mother who used to prepare masala tea regularly for 15yrs and i had taken that for granted. How i missed that tea! It was like fuel to my body. How would this body function without it? No breakfast too. I had not even brought bread-and-butter . In any case i am not used to eating all those. I reach out for some biscuits and banana chips which my mother had packed for me. I put on my favourite blue shirt and my blazer . Hiten arrives to pick-me-up, and we land in the project. The body was there but the mind and stomach was somewhere else .

All faces lit up as I arrived, the project manager in particular seemed very pleased. I had never seen so many people happy just because I arrived. Life sometimes gives you a lot without doing much, I guess. There were however some small things I did right. I was neatly dressed looked fresh after the nights sleep. My elder brother always advised me to wear a tie and a blazer on the first day of every new project . He felt it made a wonderful impression even if it was not the culture of the client. You can always remove it later, he used to tell me . Listening to some of his words i guess went on to make that first memorable impression .

The project manager was a Scottish. He was very confident I was the guy he was waiting for! It seemed he had looked for a profile of SAP FICO all over US then and found none. Back during those days no one was interestd to do both FI and CO. They found a guy in me sitting faraway in a remote place in Mumbai to do the job. Wow! I can call this only destiny !

A few hours later I was called by the Project Manager to his cabin. " So Vish......" He had hardly begun talking, that I stopped him! I had something more important to tell him .....

What I told him helped me remain in the project for another 15 months though I knew very little of CO then. I will tell you what I told him in the next blog.
